How can I improve my Oral Health?
A variety of modifiable risk factors, including sugar consumption, cigarette use, alcohol use, poor hygiene, and their underlying social and economic determinants, contribute to the development of oral disorders. These risk factors are also common to many noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The majority of the bacteria in your mouth are harmless, just like in other parts of the body.
Yet, some of these bacteria can spread disease as your mouth serves as the entrance to your digestive and respiratory systems. Bacteria are often kept in check by the body's natural defenses and proper oral hygiene practices like daily brushing and flossing. But without good dental hygiene, bacteria may build up to the point where they cause oral infections including tooth decay and gum disease.
- Brush regularly but not aggressively
- Use fluoride
- Floss once a day
- See a dentist regularly
- Do not smoke
- Consider a mouthwash
- Limit sugary foods and starches
- Drink water instead of sugary drinks
